Breed Standards

1. Body
The Birman is a medium cat, with the body slightly long and strong, with heavy and strong bones, powerfull and good muscles. The legs are short, strong and with round feet. The males are bigger and may reach up to 9 kilos.

2. Head
Face bones very strong, with round cheeks. The ears are of medium size and must have round points, large atr the base and very thick in the interior. Convex profile and round skull. About the nose, it must be roman stile , strong chin, and with right angle related to the superior lips.

3. Eyes
Color dark blue, medium size and rounded, the blue should be as darker as possible, and very uniform for the lighter ones.

4. Hair
Demi-long. The Birman are cats of the colourpoint type, what means they have pigments only at the extremities: face, ears, tail and legs: similar to the Siameses and the himalays except for the fingers, that are white (“gloves”).
The body and the belly must be pale cream coloured, similar to the egg shell. They have a soft feeling, and need only a good brush scrubing.

5. Gloves
One of the main features of the Birmans are the gloves, that must be white on the four paws . The white must cover all the fingers and stop at the junction of the wriest. On the back paws, the white ends with a V-shape, and must not go over the middle of the paw.

A good glove is the most difficult feature to be accomplished. It´s virtually impossible to control this, because we don´t know what is the gene that interferes on the characteristics of the gloves. The practice told us that it is not enough to have good parents to assure that the kits will have it. It is a kind of lotto. Due to this, we have not many breeders of the Birmans, because it is very hard to have a “Best in Show” cat.

Anyhow, this is only a detail for the expositions, because with good bad gloves, the Birmans will be always very kind, loving, sweet and extremely socialized with people, besides their special beauty.

6. Tail
Must be medium size, with the shape of a plume.

7. Colours
The recognized ones are: Seal; Blue; Red; Cream; Chocolate; Lilac and Silver. Tabby or Lynx we can find in all colours with a tiger effect. Tortie or Torbie only for the females. About the Siver ones, only some of the Federations will recognize it. Here in Brasil is very difficult to find it in the Birmans, but in New Zealand is very common.
